Quickmap Modernization
Client:
Problem:
Caltrans QuickMap, the state’s public tool for real-time traffic and road conditions, was due for a full modernization across web and mobile. The existing website and web application ran on an outdated backend and frontend, the visual design predated the State of California’s current web standards, and the icon system had grown inconsistent over time, making map layers harder to parse at a glance. The experience also needed to work seamlessly across the browser application and its companion mobile apps, so travelers could rely on the same information no matter how they accessed it.
Approach:
I led the frontend redesign of QuickMap alongside a backend rebuild by the development team, extending the same experience to the mobile applications so travelers get a consistent, reliable view of road conditions across platforms. The project included a complete rebrand: a new QuickMap logo, a redesigned icon set organized by map layer category (general information, current road conditions, travel facilities, winter conditions, and commercial vehicle information), and alignment with the State of California’s web design standards, including accessible interaction patterns like the DOT accordion component used throughout the FAQ pages.
